Course Offering: Operating Inside the Collapse
Wednesday, June 27 2007

A Focused Approach at Further Developing Inside Operations and Technical Skills at Structural Collapse Events

This three day course is designed for rescuers who have already completed concrete structural collapse training and want to further develop their search and rescue skills. This course will enhance job performance requirements when operating in the danger zone inside void spaces at collapse events. This course includes:

1.Difficult Breaching Concepts-This wok station will develop skills for internal void space breaching, and de-layering of multiple concrete layers overhead as well as moving downward. Skill development will focus on effective tool applications, and use of rigging equipment to perform internal segmental lift out techniques.

2.Internal Shoring Concepts-This work station will enhance rescuers capabilities in applying shoring and/or stabilization techniques while operating inside void spaces or void tunnels. As opposed to basic structural collapse shoring classes, which primarily focuses on external shoring, this course will advance further by focusing on applying shoring and cribbing concepts within the void space area.

3.Void Space Search-This work station will allow rescuers the opportunity to enhance their capabilities and skill levels by applying visual search devices within void spaces. Students will learn capabilities and limitations of visual search tools and they will gain a better understanding of what to expect when applying these tools within a collapse void.

4.Lifting and Stabilization of Heavy Loads Inside of Void Spaces-As opposed to having students go through a heavy lifting obstacle course in a wide open area, this work station will build rescuers skills and improve their knowledge relative to rescuing patients that are trapped under heavy loads inside a collapse void. Rescuers will learn to apply stabilization and lifting concepts, and package and move patients that are trapped in small compact voids.

This course is primarily designed for rescue teams who have already completed concrete building collapse training and are looking to further enhance their skill levels.
